The maiden tsar is a Russian folk tale about a boy named Ivan who visits the three baba Yaga sisters in the woods in which they dwell asking them questions about a kingdom he seeks. The sisters are somewhat adverse to humans and each sends him to the other sister until he reaches the final one which tries to eat him. At that moment he summons the Firebird, which carries him to safety.

The illustration depicts the moment in which Ivan is talking to the last baba Yaga in her hut, which stands in the forest on a single chicken’s leg. Usually, they are depicted as being old and ugly and always located near the hearth of the hut.
